It didn’t start snowing till 5am. Wait, wow, snow on 410 shortly out of The Claw at 7:30. Wooohoos were cut short by the slow moving road grader going 25. Till he finally pulled over, only to be quickly replaced by a snow plow going 25. We appreciated the effort, but come on. Out of Greenwater, put the new Skibaru on point, passed the plow, and continued up at a safe-for-conditions pace of 50. The new pavement on Crystal Boulevard allowed them to plow groomer-smooth side to side. With no traffic, I longed for the Turboru and a rally set up. I digress. Pulled into the lot along with the rest of the gang that passed the plow behind me as the snowfall ended. 5am to 8:30 and 5-8” of new had been placed on the mountain for our enjoyment.
And enjoy we did. Right out of the starting gate Amigoette and I dove into our favorite M-World lines. Smooth untracked led to bumps under more untracked. And we never looked back. More Memorial untracked led to Breakover-Sunnyside untracked - over and over. And first tracks down Bear Pits, and….. You get the gist of it all. A couple laps of Grubstake Trees and C-3 Chairline. Nope, not tracks here. And what about Northway.
OK, I’ll stop bragging (Northway was awesome BTW). I’ll let you find the stashes on your own. Today was one of those days where knowing where to go early paid off and knowing what others will miss payed off later. It’s Christmas break for most kids, and parental units were showing them the ropes everywhere. Not enough for full chairs or any lines - that will be next week - and they stuck to the lumpy new over groomer runs for the most part. If you know where to look, Door Zero, C-6 Chute .5, and Somewhere in Memorial (to keep you guessing) had untracked to the end of the day.
Sometimes, being persistent, retired, and 45 years of Crystal experience pays off. Big time.
A hard to read front moves in tonight for another, bigger version of today’s weather. Lots of precip should result in 10-15” or more of new snow by tuesday morning with wind. But…. The snow level will be rising to mid mountain overnight so it could be lots up top and slop down low. Good news is, maybe, it will pack in and cover all the sticks and stumps I hit today. Wednesday looks dry with some sun as the snow level rises even higher before dropping, rock like, for some light snow Thursday, and cold and dry on friday.
